Virgin Festival Toronto: Who Will Be Added Next?

July 10th, 2008

So I was just watching The Verve’s performance of their brand new single Love Is Noise at Glastonbury 2008, which took place last week, thinking to myself, man, I NEED to see them in a festival setting again. I actually saw them at Glastonbury 1995…13 years ago!! I can’t believe I missed them when they were in Toronto last month. And then…it dawned on me:

The album’s out August 19. They’ll most certainly be touring again to promote it, and they’re already playing two other Virgin Festival dates in the UK. So why not Toronto? They’ve got nothing on their September tour schedule (according to MySpace) yet…come on!

Word has it there are still LOTS more big name acts to be announced before September 6 & 7 roll around. So why not The Verve? Imagine? The Verve ushering in Oasis on the main stage on Day 2. Maybe even do a collaboration right then and there. It’d be epic.

So I’m officially predicting that they’ll be added to the lineup based on no evidence other than sniffing around and doing the date math. Who else would do a great job at rounding out the Toronto festival? Some other predictions - all these artists have new stuff out this year and be epic:

  1. just a few names to be added to the predictions list:

    Albert Hammond Jr.

    Kate Nash

    We Are Scientists

    Goldfrapp

  2. I agree The Verve would be amazingggggggg to see at V.

    For me:

    Kaiser Chiefs

    The Dykeenies

    Kate Nash

    & V would be complete :)

  3. If I could add previous V-fest Toronto acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Interpol and Muse, that’d be a dream come true!

But it aint going to happen so…

Add Franz Ferdinand to previous lineup and -then- it’d be complete :). Franz have been popping up doing some festival appearances recently, so who knows? It could happen.

  4. I would love to see UK newcomers like:

    Johnny Foreigner

    Look See Proof

    The Joy Formidable

    Blood Red Shoes

    That would most deff rock.

  5. well, i want these people to be added…so muchmusic can u suggest them???:

    -Tokio Hotel

    -Jonas Brothers

  6. I have only heard of 2 of these bands

  7. So far, this show is fantastic for NME bands. If they want to be a destination festival for anglophiles, I’d love to see them bring over a big UK act that never tours North America for one-off show. Manic Street Preachers or Babyshambles would be good.

  8. @commuter: I have to agree, HOWEVER, you know neither of those acts will never come here. #1, Babyshamblse won’t make it across the border, and #2, MSP can never return to North American soil bc of that whole Fidel Castro debacle with the U.S. They’ve been disinvited - last time they were here was 1999 and that was like 3 albums ago! :(

  9. @Kat: Canada has never held a trade embargo against Cuba and still maintain diplomatic ties with its government. The Manics have also played Toronto subsequently after the Cuba gig, so that wouldn’t even be a consideration.

That being said, I would love to see them here, as well.

    @Sharmini: You’re being facetious, right?

  10. @Mike: Right - I know Canada doesn’t hold the same laws as the U.S. But what I’m saying is that if a band isn’t gonna do a U.S. tour, chances are they won’t come all the way to Canada just to do a handful of dates.

When/where were these post 1999 gigs? You’re saying that they toured here for Know Your Enemy or Send Away The Tigers??

  11. I’d love to see the Verve at V Fest. Saw them at Coachella & they were InVincible!

    My other votes are:

    Kasabian

    the Enemy

  12. Kate Nash all the way

or Ladytron would be even more amazing

  13. Jonas Brothers? hhahah

    dtwafaky

  14. Alright guys. So im going to the vfest and CANT WAIT. Just on the Sunday though. Anyway, i’m from Scotland and was wondering last year, how many stages were there, and did they play kinda european bands on one stage and others on another? Cause i’d be gutted if for example, Oasis and Stereophonics played at the same time. If anyone can answer any of these questions that would be great!

    oh, and id love to see;

    kate nash

    jamie t

    & arctic monkeys

added to the line up. amazing.

    thanks.

  15. the Verve comeback would be great to see

but Weezer would be awesome to see as well..

  16. Hey Ray,

Dont know how many stages last year, but do know that Bacardi is having a tent/lounge set up at vfest..called B-Live.

Wont have Oasis but is bringing in alot of DJs to headline…

Moby, Deadmau5, Switch, Sebastian, Flosstradamus, Lee Burridge, Drop the lime, Nasty Nav, Evan G

should be good. hope that helped.

  17. For people who insist on such horrible bands such as tokio hotel or jonas brothers or weezer, leave it alone because they’ll never be accepted, its a rock concert, not a baby show.

If they want to top last two V-Fests, they should have big bands such as U2, Vampire Weekend, Beck, The Virgins, Radiohead etc…Good bands you know, not kiddy bands.

  18. Weezer, Beck, The Verve??? I would lose my mind right there and then! If I could choose, and besides from the above mentioned bands, I would add PJ (long sho - eddie is touring canada solo), Interpol (they were playing on Pemberton) and Metric. Albert Hammond Jr would be great too. Maybe Muse…asking too much?

  19. Under a month out and I’m losing hope for the big adds that the original post hinted at. Since then we’ve got Yoav and according to Much Music’s page, Matt Costa. Not good at all. If they don’t add anything big at least we will have short ferry waits and a lot of room to move around on Sunday.

I’m going to predict the Rifles get added. Would fit with Weller on the bill and they will be in North America in September.

Also, I hate to say it but this summer’s festival poison, Jack Johnson, is free that weekend. Wouldn’t fit on the bill but then again neither does Costa.

  20. ooooh… Weezer would be an EPIC addition to the lineup… and so would the Verve… but i’d also love to see:

    - The Hives

    - Sam Roberts

    - The Strokes

    - Our Lady Peace

    - Matthew Good

    - Incubus

    - Franz Ferdinand

    - Bedouin Soundclash

    - The Kaiser Chiefs

  21. What I’ve dug up and been informed of so far, in terms of “unannounced” additions

    Paper Lions

    Shad

    The Arkells

    Lights

    Jesse Krakow

    The Waking Eyes

    Matt Costa

Sadly, I think y’all are aiming a little high. If they stick to the same press release schedule as last year, the final acts should be announced late this week, early next week.

  22. Agreed - Frank, none of those bands excite me. I feel ilke they’ll add someone else to the first day though. A semi-main headliner.

  23. While I could see a couple more good additions, I think this is pretty much it for the lineup, since they probably blew way more money on the headliners than in previous years.

  24. I do not believe this

  25. Schedule is out. Not a single notable add. Also, how the hell did they schedule the first day? Why are all the good bands playing at the same time? This years fest just keeps on getting more dissapointing.
