In The Spotlight

Steve Anthony - Episode3

One for the money, two for the show, hey Big Norm, it's time to go.

Articulate, bright, charming, talented. Why did we dump him?

Too much about being in the spotlight. Actually, too much being the spotlight. It's too bad, really.

To be a VJ, you have to communicate on a "one-to-one" basis. Norm communicates on a "Norm-to-Norm" basis, which is great for a performer, but too much for a VJ.

Norm will have a successful career as a front person, performing for people. But a VJ has to be a "conduit" for the viewer, and it just felt like it was too much about him.

And that's not a fault. That's great for him, and exactly the right attitude for a spotlight person, just not the right attitude for a VJ.

I write these thoughts for you to comment on, and please do so. I am doing this job as a panelist to get you, the Much fan, the right person, and if you think I am wrong, I'd like to know why. It might help me in my decisions on future episodes.

Part of it, also, of which he was not the only guilty one, was opening his mouth at this point about what his plans are for the future. Good god! I'm paraphrasing here, but talking about how MuchMusic is the springboard to what he really wants to do is not something you want judges who are deciding who is getting the immediate job of being a VJ to hear. Of course i don't begrudge him his long term plans. But it's not what you don't say, it's what you do say. He could have kept that to himself, considering the environment that he was in. Bad choice of something to talk to the press about. Did he think that we are going to appreciate someone who doesn't even have the job yet, and they have already quit and moved on? What were they thinking? No one grows old being a VJ. We all know that. But timing counts. And this was bad timing.

On a side note, I know that many of you think that Robin is pretty much a bastard. Well, let me tell you this, as someone who is sharing the panel table with him; he's really a lamb in wolf's clothing. He cries like a baby when we come to the final decision about who is "off the air". I try to cuddle him, but he won't let me. So I cuddle Traci instead. Then I cuddle Kardi.

I like my job.

I like my job a lot.

Yeah Robin is a wolf in sheep's clothing and I am James Hetfield in Celine Dion's clothing. Wait... that's not right. Anyway, I agree that the "good cop, bad cop" thing you have going with Bobin Rack works for the dyanamic of the panel....
So you wanted input about your decision? I think it could have been anyone of about half of the contestants so far to be cut. I won't name names, but Norm (poor guy) was as good a choice to go as any of about 5 or 6 of them. As you say, its not because they aren't talented people, but because they just don't seem to be cut out of VJ cloth. The eliminations just get harder and harder from here though, hey? But it DOES make for good T.V.! Anyway, kudos to all the contestants who have appeared on the show for their kavortka!

Larissa is not even remotely talented or special enough as a VJ to make up for her being a crappy human being. It took her one episode for people to figure her out and see her for what she is. I DO NOT WANT HER ON MY TV....and according to last weeks polls, neither does anyone else! She cant represent canada...that would be sad! I am sure she can be sweet when she wants to be (more fakeness) HOWEVER....you cant have this show be a reality show and not take some kind of responsibility for who you let win. You need talent and personality and a person that Canadians want to invite in their homes. She is not deserving....I would turn the channel if it was her. Sorry! Much Music has always chosen people who we love as people as well as VJs! Its a canadian tradition!

Steve...let me begin by saying....you set an awesome standard for these wanabees. I hope in the end you guys choose someone who is remotely worthy and that will do as you did in getting people excited and interested and informed about music.

My comment is this...how could you tell Larissa that she didnt have to defend herself being difficult. You said that lots of showbiz celebrities are like that and have never been fired. But She is not here to be a celebrity....she is a VJ and it would be EXTREMELY unacceptable to treat the artists like she treats people around her and in that house. There isnt a genuine bone in her body. And I might add....she isnt a celebrity yet....has she ever even acted in anything? This furthers the point that she shouldnt be acting the way she did.
Thanks for your time...
P.S. I have done some research on the candidates (so I wouldnt look like a fool writing in) and I saw Larissa hosting her APTN stuff and she was pretty weak if I might add.

Larissa IS a nice girl. Im not sure what the outbursts are about. I didnt know that she wanted to be a VJ but I think she's be good at it in the long run. I wish her well. Fingers are crossed...

I must honestly say that after watching the losers lounge segment that i find norm to be very etertaining. I mean, yes, he is over the top, and yes, he is more flambouent than the other contestants, but he is so entertaining. I honestly think that what Much Music needs is someone with a little edge and appeal. I know many viewers remember X-TENDAMIX and how entertaining Master T was. I tuned in to that show every morning to see him and his keyboard. No offense but I find the VJs of today to have no substance, very cookie cutter and very drab. If at all your show is having a contestant come back as a competitor I say norm. Not only is he talented but he is a natural in front of the camera, from losers lounge to audition tape the kid has skilla and i was so embarrassed for this show when you cut one of the more talented people.
