VMAs: Things That Got Lost In The Fire

So I’m sitting here perusing the various media outlets and their post-coverage of last night’s VMAs, and no big surprise, Rich at FourFour has the best recap out there (read it here). As always, expect amazing gifs, some of which I’ll use here, to dazzling effect.

Now, on to the things that I’d like to discuss - things that kinda fell by the wayside on account of all the Kanye hoopla.

1. The MJ tribute. Madonna’s speech, although read off a prompter, was still obviously written with much of her input and heart. I thought it was beautiful. The MJ dancers that took the stage afterwards were of course phenomenal, but the culmination of the performance came when Janet sang her verse on “Scream”, raspy and furious. I seriously bawled the moment she began the video dance sequence, Michael following her every move on the screen behind.

2. Pink. Her high-flying, acrobatic performance was oddly subtle and moving while at the same time being explosive and unique. Then she caps it off with a Twitter comment that was so perfect: “Kanye West is the biggest piece of shit on earth. Quote me.”

3. Lil’ Mama. What the EFF was up with her getting on stage during Jay-Z’s performance?!?! This needs to be explained. EW.com tackles the mystery to no avail. Soon afterward, Fabolous started a Twitter trend called “#lilmamais”. I.E. “#lilmamais the bird that flew outta Lady Gaga’s nest on her face!!”

4. Lady Gaga’s best outfit of the night, nodding to Jay-Z & Alicia:

  1. Perfect paragraph about Pink’s performance. I thought hers was one of the best of the night. It seems like Gaga is trying wayyyyyyy too hard these days.

  2. I love taylor swift and beyonce so it is difficult to decide whos video was better.. either way Kayne West had no right to do that to Taylor! It was very rude and disrespectful

    I have lost all respect for him.. ugghh Hes a dick :P

    I definitely think Taylor Swift deserved that award hands down. She is super talented not to mention gorgeous and has gone so far in such a short time! Beyonce still got overall video of the year in the end which I think she deserved as well. Kanye should have been kicked out for being such a prick! I hope he continues to get negative feedback for that. His ego definitely needs some deflating.

  4. I think Kanye is a brilliant self-marketing machine, above all else. He is simply adding to his legacy. In 5 years, people will remember this year’s VMA’s as the year “Kanye stormed the stage.” Just like we’ll always remember his “George Bush hates black people” tirade. That quote was quite controversial, and now people remember it as hilarious.

    And I think a similiar transformation will occur with this incident over time. Kanye knows what he is doing.

    That being said, what a dick.
