Vote

June 1st, 2004

Ok, as many of you may have heard, there is a federal election coming up!! I?m not going to sound like your mom or dad here?so listen up. If you are over 18, you should be aware of what is going in the world of Canadian politics.

I?m not saying you have to be an expert, but how about starting by at least knowing who is running for office in your riding? You see, we live in a country with a parliamentary government. This means you do not vote for the person you want to be Prime Minister, you vote for the person running for the party in your district. The candidate with the most ridings in Canada, becomes the next Prime Minister.

Guys, politicians control so much. There?s nothing wrong with that but it?s important to know what they do control. Everything from how much to spend on healthcare to stuff u wouldn?t expect -?like deciding how much interest your bank is allowed to give you for keeping your money there.

Many politicians are counting on young people not to vote, so show them up and make a difference in YOUR future!!!

The great thing about Canada is the fact that we actually have more than two major parties (the states have Democrats, Republicans and Ralf Nader?but that?s another story altogether).

The point is you have a choice. There are more than 3 parties in Canada, meaning for the most part, there will be a party out there that speaks to you. And if there isn?t a party that speaks to you and your values, maybe you should be asking yourself why. Maybe you should be asking the politicians who control YOUR country why the issues you believe in are being ignored.

If?the party you vote for does not win -?bummer. But, that?s not the point of the exercise. The point of voting is to express your opinion and, at very least, you?ll have gotten yourself involved in a process that will dictate a lot of what happens when you grow older.

I?m not going to tell you who to vote for. I’m just asking you to get more involved in YOUR country and YOUR future. I can?t stress how valuable this kind of knowledge is guys.

If you have any questions/comments (positive or negative) about what I?m saying, write me, drop me an email, its better to discuss them than ignore them.

Take care of yourselves,

Devon
