In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, Hunger Games’ director Gary Ross and producer Nina Jacobson reveal the four storylines that won’t be present in the film adaption. While it’s always worrisome to see key elements from a book absent in the film version, Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins gave her blessing to the changes, which gives me hope that the film will do the series justice.
Here’s a list of the four elements that didn’t make the cut for the Hunger Games film.
1. Madge – In the second trailer for the film we saw Katniss exchange the Mockingjay pin with her sister, Primrose. This seemed confusing, since in the book Katniss’ friend Madge gave her the Mockingjay pin right before she left District 12 for the Capitol. Madge’s character only appears a handful of times in the series, so her cut from the film is understandable.
2. Avoxes – The ‘slaves’ of the capitol will still be present in the film, but they will not play as big a role as they did in the book series. From the trailer we see the scene where Gale and Katniss are hunting and encounter the ship in the woods. In the book this ship grabs two people who have fun away from the Capitol and turn them into Avoxes. I’m excited to see whether this scenes plays out the same way.
3. Katniss and Peeta’s Prep Team – Octavia, Flavius and Venia will still be in the film, but their role will be minimized, focusing more on Lenny Kravitz as Cinna.
4. Capitol Gadgets – Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Entertainment Weekly the reasoning behind the removal of the Capitol gadgets described in the book, saying “we didn’t want the Capitol to appear too fanciful. It has to appear ominous and threatening. The Capitol has to be a mind-blowing experience, but it can’t be Whoville.”
Check out a clip of the film below. It’s good to see that Katniss and her ass kicking will not be absent from the film.
