Just last Saturday, Wedge host Damian Abraham was speaking to Win and Will Butler of Arcade Fire about their upcoming trip to Haiti to perform an impromptu concert.
Well, it happened on Tuesday night in front of a modest crowd at the Hotel Oloffson in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, where the earthquake famously struck in January 2010. According to Rolling Stone, the show was advertised as the “Grand Return of the World Famous Band from Canada.” The magazine has posted a gallery of photos from the gig here.
As they explained to Damian, the band felt it was important to perform a number of covers for the sake of the audience, who were likely unfamiliar with the Arcade Fire catalogue. The covers they ended up playing were Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” Blondie’s “The Tide Is High” (originally performed by the Paragons), The Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time” and Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”
You can watch footage of the last two songs below, which were shot by filmmaker Jennifer Weiss.
