Last night, the sixth annual Polaris Music Prize gala was held in Toronto. Co-hosted by The Wedge‘s very own Damian Abraham, who won it two years ago with his band Fucked Up, the 2011 prize was awarded to Arcade Fire for their 2010 album, The Suburbs.
Being the co-host and all, Damian had the privilege of grabbing all three members of the band – Win Butler, Richard Reed Perry and Jeremy Gara – minutes after their somewhat unexpected victory over artists such as Destroyer, Austra, Timber Timbre, The Weeknd and Colin Stetson.
Damian was there when Win Butler was called by his wife and bandmate Regine Chassagne and told her that they won. But he also brought his oversized Polaris novelty cheque from 2009 to compare it to Arcade Fire’s 2011 cheque, which we should point out is worth $10,000 more, much to Damian’s chagrin. Oh, and Win Butler smashes a MuchMusic microphone, which may or may not cost them that extra $10k.
Of course, you can catch more behind the scenes footage from the 2011 Polaris Music Prize this week on The Wedge, airing this Thursday at 2:00 AM EST. Also, you can catch a special broadcast of the Polaris Music Prize gala on MuchMusic this Saturday, September 24th at 10:00 PM EST.
