Is Taylor Swift’s new video aimed towards ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal? After premiering last night on CMT, fans have already begun to dissect the break-up anthem’s visuals, showing similarities between We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and Swift’s relationship with the actor (check out this Tumblr for side by side photos). Regardless of who the song is directed towards, it’s a track that fans will surely be singing at the top of their lungs with friends while mourning their own break ups, similar to Kelly Clarkson’s huge hit Since You’ve Been Gone.
Teaming up with her Mean and Ours director Declan Whitebloom for a third time, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together features a seamless shot that includes Swift making five costume changes, while her band dressed in animal costumes shakes their tail feathers in the background. Taylor told MTV “At one point I had a breaking point where I was like, ‘I can’t do that many costume changes in that short amount of time!’ But we actually ended up being able to do it.” The reasoning behind the animal costumes seems to even escape Swift herself, who at one point looks at the camera and mouths “I don’t know” while shrugging.
From squirrel pajama’s to human squirrel’s, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is perfect for Taylor’s legions of fans who love their fun and confident role model. Maybe not so good for her ex, though. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is Taylor’s first single off Red, due out October 22.
