It’s actually dangerous
July 23rd, 2014
It’s been three years since UK singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse passed away at only 27 years-old.
The soulful singer’s music continues to live on and inspire a new generation of musicians, with many of Amy’s peers still playing the songs she made famous with only two studio albums.
In honour of Winehouse, today we’re taking a look at some of our favourite covers of her work.
1. Beyoncé and Andre 3000, Back to Black
Beyoncé and Andre 3000 reworked Winehouse’s Back to Black for The Great Gatsby soundtrack, giving the song a errily haunting makeover.
2. Conor Maynard, Back to Black/Valerie
As Maynard says in his video, with Amy Winehouse it was all about the voice.
3. Arctic Monkeys, You Know I’m No Good
Fellow UK artists honoured the hard-hitting rock sound of You Know I’m No Good, with lead singer Alex Turner delivering the perfect amount of grit and attitude in Winehouse’s song.
4. George Michael, Love Is A Losing Game
George Michael honoured Amy Winehouse’s memory by calling her ‘possibly the greatest British female singer ever’ before performing her melancholic tale of heartache with Love Is A Losing Game.
5. Bruno Mars, Valerie
If you’re going to take on one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, you better be one of the greatest musicians in the game. This wasn’t a problem for Bruno Mars’ tribute to Amy Winehouse with Valerie.
6. Coldplay, Rehab
Only weeks after the singer’s death, Coldplay honoured Winehouse by performing a mash up of Rehab with their hit song Fix You at Lollapalooza. The juxtaposition of the two songs are a sad reminder of the horrors endured by those affected by drug addiction.
7. Florence Welch, Back to Black
Florence and the Machine front woman Florence Welch gave a stirring rendition of Back to Black during a special Amy Winehouse tribute at the 2011 VH1 Divas Special.
8. Jojo, You Know I’m No Good
Pop singer Jojo knows that when someone writes a song as moving and audibly perfect as You Know I’m No Good, you don’t mess with it.
9. Couer de Pirate, You Know I’m No Good
Montreal singer Couer de Pirate delivers a fragile, piano-driven version of You Know I’m No Good, giving the song a vulnerable feel.
10. Melanie Fiona, Wake Up Alone
Canadian R’n B singer Melanie Fiona kept all of Winehouse’s signature vocal nuances in her rendition of Wake Up Alone, a soulful cover we think Amy would have loved.
11. The Vamps and A*M*E*, Valerie
Brit teens The Vamps along with singer A*M*E* posted an upbeat performance of Valerie to YouTube, bringing Winehouse’s music to North American teens who may not be familiar with the late artist’s work.Tweet
