Weezer’s Troublemaker tour rolled into town last night and rocked the ACC (or the Air Centre as Weezer referred to it as). Joining Weezer on the bill were Newmarket’s own Tokyo Police Club and Tom DeLonge’s Angels & Airwaves. Tokyo Police Club got things started and although I didn’t make it in time to see them I’m sure their set was awesome, as it was back in May at the Opera House.
Next up was Angels & Airwaves. I got there a few songs into their set but Dan was there from the start and here are his thoughts on their set.
Will the real Tom DeLonge please stand up? The Angels & Airwaves front-man (ex Blink 182/Boxcar Racer) appears to have had his body possessed by an alien. At one point in the show Tom had fastened giant laser goggles to his head, which wasn’t nearly a cool as it sounds. This was followed up by wearing hand attachments similar to a Light-Bright and flailing his arms about like a wacky wavy inflatable arm flailing man you’d typically see at a used car dealership. Between the questionable dancing moments A & A powered through all of their best songs/singles with a pretty nice light show to support them. They played songs like Everything’s Magic, Breath, Sirens, Secret Crowds, The War, and finished it all off with The Adventure. No Blink or Boxcar covers this time around…bummer.

This was my second Weezer show and it couldn’t have been anymore exciting than it was. They had surprises up their sleeve for the whole show and did not disappoint. The boys of Weezer stormed the stage wearing white jumpsuits with ‘Weezer’ printed on the back and opened the show with their 1994 hit My Name Is Jonas. On their most recent self-titled album (also called ‘The Red Album’) Rivers Cuomo isn’t the only one who sings. The whole band contributed and sang. And they did the exact same for the entire show. My Name Is Jonas was sung by bassist Scott Shriner and guitarist Brian Bell while Rivers came in during the chorus. They followed that with the Pinkerton hit Pink Triangle and Perfect Situation. After they were done, Rivers excused himself as he got a little more “comfortable” by taking off the white jumpsuit and revealing a red Weezer track suit, which all four members were then wearing.
Once the band got more comfortable and removed the jumpsuits they pumped out all their hits including Say It Ain’t So, Keep Fishin’ and the rare B-Side Susanne. They followed that up with what could possibly be one of the best Weezer tracks King, which is sung by bassist Scott Shriner and is featured on the bonus disc of The Red Album.
Throughout the whole show Rivers seemed like he was having a blast, going from one side of the stage to the other, jumping on his mini trampoline and even playing with a soccer ball (which he later kick into the crowd). Adding to his exciting and entertaining stage presence was when he decided to use a headset mic to sing Dreamin’, which he kindly dedicated to Miley Cyrus.
Drummer Patrick Wilson played his track off The Red Album Automatic with Rivers taking a break. Before they played Automatic they were having some fun and played a bit of Rush’s classic’s Spirit of the Radio & Tom Sawyer. Pat returned to drums and front-man Rivers invited A&A’s Tom DeLonge to join him in a duet of Undone - The Sweater Song. Besides Tom’s strange dance moves, the duet somehow worked and the crowd was eating it up!
Thinking that the night couldn’t get better they bust out covers of Nirvana’s Sliver and Oasis’ Morning Glory’! Patrick Wilson jokingly invited someone to try and attack him similar to what had happened to Noel Gallagher at VFest earlier this month. Pat sang lead vocals during ‘Morning Glory’ while Rivers was on drums.
During their encore performance they had about 30 musicians on stage with them and played Island In The Sun and Beverly Hills. During the two songs a cow bell, an accordion and other instruments got to perform solos to the delight of the crowd.
To close the show and an amazing night, they played their smash hit Buddy Holly from their self-titled (also referred to as The Blue Album) debut album.
All in all, an amazing show and can’t wait until Weezer are back in TO to rock again!

I was at this show! It was my third time seeing Weezer, and it was the best show I’ve ever seen them do. I was also a part of the Hootenanny playing guitar. That was such a trip. I can’t wait for their return either. Also I’ve been looking for their setlist, so thanks!
