Hey, remember when I predicted that Weird Al would have the comeback of the year?
Well call me psychic, because Al is definitely on his way! The King of Parody has scored his first #1 album with Mandatory Fun, selling over 104,000 copies in the US. That’s pretty incredible considering that Al has been making hilarious music and has had countless hits for over 30 years.
Weird Al himself seemed stunned by his accomplishment on Twitter:
Even more impressive is the fact that it’s the first comedy album to top the Billboard 200 albums chart in 51 years!
Just goes to show you that Weird Al’s comedic genius never goes out of style. No doubt his sales were helped out by the release of hilarious videos like Foil, a send-up of Lorde’s Royals, and Handy, Weird Al’s spoof of Iggy Azalea’s Fancy.
A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Weird Al and producing a one-hour interview with him for MuchMore. As a long-time fan it was a total thrill, and he couldn’t have been nicer to the entire crew. Matt Wells conducted a great interview, and it gives great insight into the man behind all those legendary parodies.
It’s definitely worth a watch if you love Weird Al!Tweet
