Cool Runnings hit theatres in 1993 and told the story of the Jamaican Bobsled Team, who defied the odds and qualified and competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. This year a two-man bobsled team from Jamaica qualified again for the Winter Olympics and turned to the internet to help raise money to fund their trip to Sochi.
Over the weekend, Reddit users raised $190,000 for the Jamaican team, well above their goal of $80,000. The team will now be heading to Russia to compete with the best in the world and most likely, bring a tear to our eye. (Check out a video on the original Jamaican bobsleigh team below as well as details on the new team. I dare you to not cry.)
Of course, this news about the 2014 Jamaican bobsled team stirred up memories of Cool Runnings, one of the greatest sports movies ever made. Kiss the lucky egg and let’s revisit some of the greatest things Cool Runnings taught us about sports.
Practice all the time, no matter where you are or what equipment you do or don’t have.
Study tapes of the greats and tapes of yourself. It’s the best way to see where you need to improve.
Always remember that when one door in sports closes, another opens.
Practice good sportsmanship at all times, even when your competitor is a terrifying machine of a man.
Think outside the box, or the beautiful and sunny island paradise, when it comes to trying new sports.
That being said, the cold still kinda sucks. Layer up.
Travelling with sports is awesome, so try to embrace the new culture you find yourself in.
Find a team chant that works for you.
Playful teasing among teammates is fun.
Just make sure you always have each other’s back.
They’ll be the people trying to keep you alive.
Winning isn’t everything.
If at the end of the day you finish what you started, then you’ve won.
