Before They Were Stars!
November 3rd, 2011
They say seeing is believing. We wanted to travel to Ethiopia to show where donation dollars are actually spent and in doing so motivate continued support from young Canadians. After hearing so many stories about complications with food donations and general desensitization about assistance, it was important to see donations and resources going directly to communities to positively affect long lasting commitments in rehabilitation and change.
Plan Canada’s efforts include supplementary and therapeutic feeding (the feeding centers), food and nutrition assistance to schools and communities, sanitation, health promotion and child protection among other initiatives. If you’ve ever doubted that your donation dollars actually reach those who need it I can tell you they actually do. I met a woman in a Plan sponsored market in Addis Ababa who told me how her life has changed since taking part in business training that enabled her to make a living by selling chickens and eggs in the market.
She was overjoyed to explain sending her children to private school and beamed with pride as she told me how happy she was that her children would never have to struggle the way she had. She also let me handle her chickens and try to sell a few. As you can imagine she also spent a lot of time laughing at me.
