I’m talking about cover songs. Covers are done all the time in order to revitalize a song, to make it current, to capture a new audience with an old hit. But sometimes, covers aren’t done so well. Everyone has their own list of covers that suck. And there are probably longer lists of covers that don’t suck. There are probably songs that you love and don’t even know that they were done originally in the 1950s! Covers are everywhere.
A good cover, if the original piece was done less than ten years prior to the cover, has to be better then the original. An artist shouldn’t redo and re-release something that’s current. You know what, scratch that. It should be at least 15 years.
A good cover can, and sometimes should switch genres. The artist should have something new to add to the masterpiece.
Did I mention the original of the song has to be a masterpiece in itself? There, I just did.
The artist must have better songs than a cover song on the album they’re releasing. How credible can they be if the best song on the album, they didn’t even write?
Land of Confusion by Disturbed is a decent cover. Decent. But really, I’m a huge fan of Marilyn Manson’s work. He does an impeccable job covering songs.
That’s my thought. It was purely induced by my iced latte. So long!
