It’s all been about Heath Ledger lately, and rightfully so. His sudden death brings up many relevant questions about the battle with drugs in Hollywood, the relentlessness of the paparazzi, the sensationalism by the media - which Antonella has touched on in a few posts below. But it also brings up another question dealing with the business side of Hollywood: What should be done about The Dark Knight? This latest Batman installment has been gaining quite the buzz. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been inundated (online and on-air) with sneak peeks, extended trailers and pictures galore - all showcasing Heath’s creepy turn as The Joker. But now what? Should the release date be pushed back? Should the film even get released?

I, for one, feel it would be insulting to Heath if the film that he worked so hard on, and which he says was the cause of his sleeping problems, never saw the light of day.
But I also feel it would be insulting and in bad taste for the Joker-highlighted advertisements to continue. The movie poster I’ve included here, which once got me excited for The Dark Knight, now just completely creeps me out. I highly suggest that Warner Bros. shine the light back onto Christian Bale’s Batman for the time being to sell this movie.
This is a sad and sensitive time and for the studio to try to capitalize on this tragedy would be a tragedy in itself.
Thoughts?

Wasn’t it sleeping pills that he overdosed on?
Man what a difficult situation. I really hope the stuido doesn’t take things too far.
Finish the movie with him playing the character. Fix it so they don’t need him there anymore
the coverage for his death has certainly been insane, i don’t recall all this hype over renfro, who i’ve actually seen on film. the only heath film i’ll probably ever check out is this batman. i don’t think the studio will have to use him to promote it, clearly the media will do it for them. that is a great poster though.
The studio probably shouldn’t use any promotional images of the joker anymore but they probably will. I’ve only seen like one poster with batman on it. The rest have all been joker. So really I don’t think they have too much of a choice.
Soja, I don’t think I could agree with you more. Weather or not the release date should be moved, I’m not sure. But I definitely think it needs to be released.
You. A friend. A plane. Two tickets to see Adam Lambert. O. M. G.

I think it goes without saying that from now, the movies promotional work will move away from Ledger and use Batman instead. The film will be released still I don’t doubt that, but anyone with any modicum of sense realises that they won’t use Ledger as heavily as they have been for promotional items
