On Tuesday night, at long last, I was able to check out White Lies for their first ever performance on Canadian soil. If you weren’t there, you really missed out because it’ll probably be a while before they come back (their debut album To Lose My Life Or Lose My Love, most of which was heard by fans for the very first time on Tuesday, will be out in January 2009)!
The guys came out on stage decked in head to toe black - matching button-up dress shirts and black jeans. The only part of the “uniform” that was different on each band member was footwear, which ranged from winklepickers to Nike Dunks and slip ons. Singer Harry McVeigh’s voice was absolutely perfect throughout the 40 minute set of songs, which was capped off with Death, their smashing single.
Throughout the set there was a hilarious (drunk) guy, alone, tearing it up near the front of the stage. He was so maniacally drunk and dancetastic I had to snap some photos. Please note the funneling beer (shortly after I took this photo, he was covered in beer).

He professed that the band was his “favourite band ever!!” many times, and then proceeded to sit on the stage with his BACK to the band so he could text message his ‘friends’ (I use the term loosely). Amazing job, douche!

Here’s the setlist:
Farewell To The Fairground
To Lose My Life
Unfinished Business
From The Stars
A Place To Hide
E.S.T.
50 On Our Foreheads
The Price Of Love
Death
I’ve already talked about how great I think White Lies are, and this show at The Horseshoe just cemented their ability to entertain me. I’m unbelievably eager to hear these new songs in studio format when the album’s finally out. I already miss them - I was so touched when I heard To Lose My Life - it’s a gorgeous song and I hope it’s the next single. Hurry up already…three months is too long of a wait!

What the hell? Why wasn’t that guy kicked out? Why are there so many idiots at concerts now?
I wish I would have been able to see this show! I really like their single, so I have high hopes for their album. I can’t wait for it!
