So I was watching our sister station Musique Plus last night and there was a special (equivalent to our Live@Much shows) on Sam Roberts. I was curious as to how the interview portion would go down – usually in Musique Plus interviews with anglo bands, the interviewer is somewhat bilingual and asks the band questions, they respond in English, and then there are subtitles or the interviewer repeats the band’s answer in French.
Imagine my surprise when the Sam Roberts interview was almost entirely in French! I had NO idea the band could speak such impressive French. I knew they were from Montreal but being from the West Island (a VERY anglo neighbourhood in Montreal) doesn’t guarantee bilingualism. Two of the band members were perfectly bilingual – maybe even French first language – and then Sam himself was doin’ all right! You could tell that his French wasn’t perfect, but he was able to conduct the interview just fine. Anyway I was so surprised to learn this interesting tidbit about Sam Roberts & crew. Very impressive.
