The big music story today seems to be the one-off (will it just be one?) gig that a newly re-formed Led Zeppelin will be playing tonight in London. The lads are back and there is huge anticipation for the show … some people have sold their kidneys in order to get a ticket (well not quite, but one guy did pay close to 200 grand for a pair of tickets). Anyway, it looks like the Zep will be satisfying fans by playing for a full 2 hours instead of the the 40 minutes that they were initially asked to do. And the anticipation really does seem to transcend age groups, everyone from 20 somethings to gray haired 60 somethings are frothing at the mouth to see their rock god idols. So it looks like baby boomers, heavy metal die-hards, classic rock aficionados and Guitar Hero III wannabes will all leave the stadium tonight satisfied after seeing one of the most famous and seminal groups in rock history.
Which leaves me to wonder - who do you think would create the same amount of frenzy if they decided to play a one-off gig after they retired? I don’t know if that would happen in quite such a way again. There’s such a mistique and aura surrounding Zeppelin and such an insane demand to see them because it’s only the one show, it’s like the perfect storm for a rock concert. Plus, the music scene is so fractured now and musical tastes are so eclectic.. that to have one band or artist kind of overcome all of that, might be a tough proposition. Or maybe not (ie. the Spice Girls!! hahaha) So who would people go crazy for in 25 years?
A reformed Public Enemy? How about U2? Or the Fugees? Would people get all nostalgic for pop fluff like *NSYNC (especially if JT joined them onstage?) How about Linkin Park or 50 Cent or Destiny’s Child? Fall Out Boy … Maroon 5… Beastie Boys? The Killers or Foo Fighters? I don’t know who people would go nuts for in the same way. Maybe if a new band comes along with the same amount of debauchery, crazy catchy riffs and devil worshipping mythology surrounding it, then maybe we might just see another Led Zeppelin phenomenon in the future.

While I don’t think they would equal Led Zeppelin’s legacy, I think Radiohead and Tool would cause a HUGE frenzy if they reunited after 25 years.
Radiohead!!!!
