The Brit Awards went down last night (watch them again here) and were full of water cooler moments. Muse kicked off the show with a 60 piece orchestra and Robbie Williams proved why he’s a Brit Awards performer veteran with his high-energy performance of Candy.
Justin Timberlake reminded the world why he’s one of this generations most successful entertainers, performing his new song Mirrors with confidence and precision. One Direction premiered their Comic Relief track One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks), utilizing the show’s impressive winding stage and keeping their energy high throughout the performance.
Much of the buzz leading up to the show surrounded One Direction member Harry Styles and a possible run-in with ex-girlfriend and fellow performer Taylor Swift, though the two seem to avoid each other throughout the night with Styles later saying that Swift’s leather and lace performance of I Knew You Were Trouble was “great” and that “she always puts on a good show.”
In a surprising win, Lana Del Ray beat out Taylor Swift for International Female Solo Artist. If Swift was feeling down about the loss it didn’t show, with the singer being photographed at an after party smiling with International Male Solo Artist winner Frank Ocean and fellow performers Mumford and Sons and actress Carey Mulligan.
Newcomer Ben Howard seemed to be this year’s Ed Sheeran, snagging two of the night’s biggest awards, including British Breakthrough Act and British Male Solo Artist. Emeli Sande stayed close to the podium all night, taking home much deserved hardware for British Female Solo Artist and British Album of the Year for her debut disc Our Version of Events. The British singer brought the crowd to their feet, ending the night with a standing ovation for her medley of Clown and Next To Me.
