Why Are People So Messy?

April 6th, 2004

I’d like to begin with a rant. Why are people so messy? Why is it that someone left a full fast food bag, complete with crumpled soft drink cup and chocolate-smeared sundae container on my front lawn? It seems I’m always assured to find an errant chip bag, pop can, beer bottle, newspaper, chocolate bar wrapper or mysteriously smushed food item scattered across my grass. What gives? What is this need to toss crap all over the city? In Germany, the trash cans talk to you, maybe that would help. (Funny though: The article says that the cans don’t talk after dark, so that passersby don’t think there’s a CHUD creeping around saying “thank you” right before it gobbles you up).

Next rant: Why is it that when some people get over the age of 30, they whine and complain about the current state of music and swear that when they were 15 (or 20, or 25), music was sooooo much better? Don’t these people realize that they are falling into the scary Baby Boomer trap? We had to deal with the classic rock thing in the 90s, with the boomers decrying grunge and alternative music and swearing that the Stones, The Who, Lep Zep and the bloody Grateful Dead were the only REAL rock n roll (no offence to Zeppelin, mind you). How can my thirtysomething contemporaries be doing the very same thing to the next generation? Come on people, throw out your Stone Roses and Happy Mondays records and try to listen to something new and exciting for a change! Music did not end with the death of the Manchester scene.

And by the way, I love this.

Found a cool site on Metafilter - a collection of the photos and experiences of travellers around the world. It’s cool - a way to look at someone’s travel pictures without being held hostage for an hour while they regale you with tales you don’t really want to hear (”…and this hotel had the loveliest bathmats - they were soft and fluffy and a sort of cream colour. Or does it look off-white to you?…”). It’s definitely worth a look if you’ve got itchy feet.
