In 2000, Britney Spears shocked the MTV Video Music Awards by stripping down into a bedazzled nude suit during her performance. In 2002, she performed with a live snake wrapped around her arms during I’m A Slave 4 U. And the following year, she and Madonna shared a steamy kiss that has now become an infamous moment in MTV VMAs history.
Today, nude suits are a common red carpet look (Ciara, Lady Gaga’s attire – or lack of attire – throughout the show last night, etc.), live animals is child’s play and we have entire performances devoted to gay rights and equality. These things aren’t shocking anymore, which in the case of the latter, is a progressive step up for pop culture and society. The other two, though, can be attributed to our senses being pretty worn down. If a half naked pop star takes to the stage today, no one flinches. Eh, just some thigh; no big deal, right?
There was one performance at last night’s show, though, that was able to elicit a sense of discomfort, shock and awe: Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke’s smorgasbord of visual assault. And trust me, Cyrus’ nude two-piece was the least of our problems. Again, go crazy with the nude outfits, we’re totally used to that.
Two things stood out the most from that performance that was most definitely worthy of a disappointed Drake head shake — thank you, Drizzy, for accurately describing what we felt with your facial expression.
The first being Cyrus’ overtly crass behaviour that was less of a rebellious stance, showing her transition into adulthood. Instead, what most of us saw was a bratty young woman desperately trying to get our attention in the any and all offensive ways possible. This was more mindless, disrespectful behaviour than it is empowering and you know it, Miley knows it and maybe even Robin Thicke knows it. Which brings us to our second point.
Robin Thicke, the singer behind the controversial hit Blurred Lines, is 36 years old. Miley is 20. Not a huge difference, by any means, but still technically old enough to be her father. Technically. Or creepy uncle. Regardless, that would’ve been an alright pairing, seeing as the two possess a couple of the summer’s biggest hits, but Miley nuzzling Robin’s neck and then bending over to twerk on him? We’d gladly take a million live snakes over this. Cringe-worthy at its worst. A friend of mine, who had missed out on the show last night refused to watch the performance online this morning for fear of getting fired for watching an extremely NSFW clip like that. Heck, I feared for my own safety last night as I told my friend, “Can we all get arrested for watching this?”
Sure, it wasn’t illegal. But our Disney-fied version of Miley hasn’t completely fizzled out of our memories just yet and seeing Hannah Montana bent over like that was almost as heartbreaking as seeing Justin Bieber pee into a bucket. Get these images out of my head, please.
This isn’t shock with a purpose. Miley wasn’t trying to push any boundaries, she was merely standing on the boundary lines waving her foam hand around and saying “Na na na na na na, look at what I can do!” Every time she stuck her tongue out, this was exactly what she was conveying. No one bothered to edit down her insane list of demands for this performance so what we had was too much of everything. What part of this is lovable? What part of this made us want to root for her more? The only thing I wanted to do was throw a blanket over her and frantically search for her parents. WHERE WERE THEY? WWBRCD – What would Billy Ray Cyrus do?
Miley, you really don’t have to do this. If you wanted us to respect you as a fully-grown adult, this was not the way. And no matter what, this kind of outrageous display has not worn us down at all; it will continue to be creepy and sad for years to come. Take a cue from Britney and maybe ease us in with years of success and semi-provocative performances. We look back at those performances now as kind of classy, but still daring. This was just daring and not in a good sense.
