Willow Smith has released a new track titled Sugar and Spice, sampling Radiohead’s Codex off their album King of Limbs. Smith sings on the track with a soft and sweet vocal performance, a departure from her usual hard-hitting rap style on songs like Fireball and Whip My Hair.
Smith’s lyrics match the sombre tone set by Radiohead with lines like “I sat in front of the TV screen / Sad he’s always screaming at me / They wanna puncture me and then wonder why I bleed.” The young singer opens up on the track, shedding her usual bravado and showing a much more vulnerable side. The maturity of the lyrics from the 12 year-old are quite shocking, with evidence of Smith’s young age in her voice creating a powerful effect when combined with the track’s deep lyrics.
Willow is set to release her debut album later this year.
