Writers Strike Threatens H-Town…

November 2nd, 2007

A couple of weeks ago, I had warned you guys that a writers strike was looming.. Well, guess what? It’s about to happen, we’re just awaiting a date to be set. This will be the first time since 1988 that an industrywide strike has occured. Mmmhmm, both television and film writers in America will soon be walking out out of their cushy studio offices to strike. According to the NYtimes.com, the WGA (Writers Guild of America - the union for television and film writers) will inform their members today about when they’ll actually go on strike. Some other industry papers, are suggesting that they may strike as early as Monday

So how is this going to affect you?

1. There won’t be any new episodes of your favourite dramatic and comedic shows. Wanna know what happens to McDreamy and Meredith? You’ll just have to wait until the studios make negotiations with the WGA before we see any new episodes surfacing. Luckily, it won’t affect programming right away as most shows already have a few new episodes in the bag.

2. More REALITY television. Some people love it, some people hate it. For those that hate it, be prepared to find some new hobbies until the strike is over. For those that love it, be forewarned that there’s going to be a whack load of reality programming replacing your favourite primetime show.

3. No more late night shows. Adios Jon Stewart! Adios Colbert! This strike (when a date is officially set) will hit these shows the hardest. Since late night shows are filmed daily and require a team of writers to write their opening monologues and sketches, they’ll be the first to go off-air. I guess, I’ll have to start watching the real news now…

Other interesting notes:

* The Hollywood Reporter believes that Web entertainment will flourish during the strike. What do you guys think?

* Starbucks in L.A. believes that business will increase for them. Why? Because all the writers will flock to their coffee shops to write, of course… A cliche come to life..

For future media moguls, remember to always give your writers a little TLC. If not, you’re f**ed and so is the rest of North America!
Seriously though, what am I going to do now that I don’t have my shows?

  2. Why more reality shows though?

Those have writers too. Don’t try to tell me that episodes aren’t entirely scripted! Come now!

  3. They do have writers but most reality shows don’t credit them instead they give them a ’story producer’ credit… If people see a writer attached to a reality show they are deterred from it. Networks are sneaky like that ;)

Plus, writers that are part of the WGA frown upon reality shows since they don’t credit their writers as appropriately as they should.

  4. my life has just been crushed like an ant on his daily stroll down Queen Street…

  5. How long do will this go on for? WHAT ABOUT PUSHING DAISIES!? Oh dear.
