Toronto power-psych duo Yamantaka // Sonic Titan have become a bona fide buzz band as of late with their awesome, brain-melting self-titled debut album, which saw a fall release via Psychic Handshake Records. Ruby Kato Attwood from the band teamed up with animator Emily Pelstring to make a video for “Hoshi Neko.” Here’s what they had to say about it:
The artwork and puppets were hand-made by Ruby. Emily shot and animated them on 16mm film on a home-made multi-plane animation stand, and added digital effects to the transferred footage.
Combining the influence of Guy Maddin, Lotte Reiniger, Kenneth Anger, and early Atari video games, the piece ends up reflecting an aesthetic fusion consistent with Yamantaka // Sonic Titan’s artistic vision as a collective.
The process of making this video involved a lot of idea-exchange, tedious work, excitement, and several bags of googley eyes from the dollar store.
