Would you rather explain Comedy Bang! Bang! as a cult hit with endless hilarity or for every meal only eat bran flakes while reciting Justin Bieber’s hit Boyfriend? The answer probably sounds simple, but if Comedy Bang! Bang! host/creator Scott Aukerman was leading the fan favourite podcast game “Would You Rather”, the twists could be endless. In the real world, Comedy Bang! Bang! can be explained as several things hilarious, weird or as Aukerman puts it, “Bio digital jazz.”
For those who aren’t familiar with the laughter juggernaut Comedy Bang! Bang!, let us enlighten you. The half hour program is an anti-talk show that spreads across TV, podcasts and stage performances. The weekly program stars Aukerman and bandleader Reggie Watts as they host a variety of big stars, including Zach Galifianakis, Seth Rogen and Weird Al Yankovic.
“It’s kind of a fake talk show where we’re not really interested in what other talk shows are interested in,” explains Aukerman. “We have a celebrity on like Zoe Saldana or Pee Wee Herman and we’ll also have comedians on like Will Forte or Bobby Moynihan playing characters, but that’s basically the premise of both iterations of the show.”
Aukerman continues, saying “The wacky styling’s of the TV show is something that was adapted from the original podcast version of Comedy Bang! Bang!” Since it’s beginning as Comedy Death Ray Radio in 2009 the show has consistently been in the top ten podcasts on iTunes.
“We try to do something different. You know my show started out as just comedians hanging out and talking to each other,” said Aukerman about the podcast. “And then pretty quickly we found our format of you know actually performing comedy.”
A small name change and a flurry of exciting guests later, Comedy Bang! Bang! has also adapted its unique show to an onstage performance. This fall they are touring North America with an October 10th stop in Toronto at the Danforth Music Hall.
“For the stage show we’re going to do a really cool combination of what we do on the podcast and TV show,” said Aukerman. “We’re going to do a little prepared material and sketch. We’re going to do a 100 per cent improvised live podcast where Paul F. Tompkins will be doing a different character every single night.”
Along with the always-funny sketch group The Birthday Boys and all the usual Comedy Bang! Bang! games and banter, Aukerman is promising a truly unique performance at every stop on the tour.
“I think it is going to be a really fun evening where we’re going to do a lot of different types of things,” said Aukerman. “Most of it is going to be really interactive with the crowd and I think every night of the tour is going to be unique and special.”
