Your Packing & Playlist Guide To A Weekend of Festivals

August 1st, 2014

Openair Frauenfeld Celebrates 20 Year Anniversary

This is the cuh-raaaziest weekend of the summer. You’ve got Osheaga, Lollapalooza, OVO, Veld, Caribana, your neighbour’s BBQ, your best friend from kindergarten’s bridal shower and your dog’s birthday. By this point, I’m sure your plans are mostly set. So we have decided to help you with a guide to what you must bring to the big four fests happening this weekend.

OVO Fest:

Drake Performs At The O2 Arena

Put An Owl On It Clothing: A fun game you could play at OVO is spot the owls. The owl is the official symbol of Drake and OVO so you will want to find some sort of owl-related clothing to fit in with the cool crowd.

Virtual Lighter: I’m sure there will be more than one person with real lighters in their pockets at OVO Fest, for what purposes we refuse to speculate. But the better alternative is the a Virtual Lighter App. It also has what a real lighter doesn’t have, sound effects! You know you’ll want to break it out for a mellow rendition of Hold On, We’re Going Home.

Smelling Salts: OVO is known for it’s stacked line-up of surprise guests.. The festival is two full nights and as of right now only Drake and Outkast have been confirmed. So to wake you up from your fainting spell when Queen Bey herself comes on stage, make sure you or your friend has some smelling salts on hand. They’ve been a bit out of style since 1875 and could easily be confused for some sort of new drug but it’s better than being out cold for the big show.

Packing Playlist Picks (speculative):

Missy Elliot – Work It
Majid Jordan – A Place Like This

Lollapalooza:

Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival 2011 - Day 2

Map of Chicago: The fun part about going to a festival in Chicago is that you are going to a festival in Chicago. It is one of the coolest cities in North America and there is so much to do. May I recommend hitting up Wicker Park for some shopping and the the Chicago river boat cruise for a really unique tour of the city.

Discovr:
The Lollapalooza line-up is one of the biggest and most comprehensive line-ups of festival season. There is a very overwhelming amount of acts to sort through and see. This awesome music app helps you discover artists similar to your favourite ones with interactive music maps. With the app you can read the band’s bios, check out songs and videos to help with your schedule making.

Appetite: Chicago has some of the best food in North America. I mean there is obviously the classic Chicago Deep Dish Pizza but their restaurants are also world class. I’d have to presume that the quality of Chicago’s eating scene carries over in to Lollapolooza’s festival food. They have a food area called Chow Town with dozens of vendors and even a whole farmers market in case you want a bag of cherries to go alongside your vegan Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

Packing Playlist Picks:

Outkast - Roses

Jenny Lewis – Just One of The Guys

Osheaga:

Firefly Music Festival - Day 2

French-English Dictionary: Okay maybe don’t actually run out to the store and pick up one of these. Every single person you will encounter during your time at Osheaga will speak English. I will guarantee it. But, if you want to score extra credit points, try out a few simple phrases like, “Which way to the main stage?” and “Get out of the way. I need to pee.”

Good sturdy sneakers: At the risk of sounding like your mom, it is very important to pack sensible footwear. When I went to Osheaga, the journey between the main stages and the two smaller stages was at minimum a 15 minute walk. Prioritizing bands became essential and I was so, so glad that I was wearing a good pair of shoes.

mophie Juice Pack Air for iPhone 5s:
Osheaga is a pretty isolated festival. Anyone who has had to wait in line to get back to downtown Montreal at the end of the night can attest. So there is no popping back to your house or hotel for a quick phone recharge. The mophie juice pack will give you the extra power your phone needs after a long day of Vine making. It is really thin and lightweight so it won’t take up any more of your bag space than your regular phone case.

Packing Playlist Picks:

Against Me-Transgender Dysmorphia Blues:

Bleachers – I Wanna Get Better

Veld:

102.7 KIIS FM's 2014 Wango Tango - Show

Energy Bars: Of all of the festivals on this list, I’m making the educated guess that this crowd will be doing the most dancing. Not that dancing will be outlawed at the other festivals, but EDM weekends almost require a little extra moving and shaking. So to keep up your energy without having to crawl your way out of the crowd to stand in line at the hot dog vendor, stock up on energy bars. And water too while you are at it. Lots and lots of water.

Olloclip 4-in-1 Lens System for iPhone 5/5s and iPod touch (5th Gen.): If you want your pictures to look like they are on drugs while you aren’t this accessory is for you. The Olloclip 4-in-1 lens can make your pictures look super funky. You can shoot photos in wide-angle, Fisheye and macro, giving your pics a look that will blow every else’s standard pictures off of Twitter.

Wet Wipes: Things can get diiiirrty at Veld. I don’t think that needs to be explained. Get dem wet wipes.

Packing Playlist Picks:

Iggy Azalea – Fancy

Calvin Harris – Summer
