Comedian Zach Galifianakis has been popping up everywhere. Or maybe I should say popping out. His comedy is part of a trend in stand-up that I want to call: “pot belly humour.” Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s amazing. This beardo’s comedy is original, unpredictable and it even crosses over to music - like in his video cover of Kanye West’s Can’t Tell Me Nothin’. He plays a beer-bellied redneck on a farm where the pimpest ride is a John Deere. Kanye even added the link to his homepage.
The latest band to commission Zach G’s coveted tummy is The Killers. He aptly plays a killer Santa who digs Brandon Flowers’s grave in the video for Dont Shoot Me Santa.
Although Zach’s tummy might be heading the way of Gene Simmons’s tongue, my pot belly reference is more of a metaphor for his style of comedy. Zach’s humour can be sloppy and lazy at times, and it’s definitely full of Molsons.
If you watch his DVD special Live At The Purple Onion, he whips out his usual old stand-up bits. Zach seems to have nothing new prepped for the big taping of his DVD, which is done in front of a live audience. It drones on at a pot belly pace for the 90 minutes that seem like five hours. About halfway in, Zach massacres one audience member over and over again. It gets really tired, and teasing this man feels like a crutch for not having enough material.
I get it though. The banality of his humour is the joke (like Dimitri Martin, just more gross out). It’s like there’s no act. But I just can’t help thinking he got out of bed two minutes before this non-act. And I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.
Zach’s comedy is just so loose that sometimes I wish he’d take it to the gym. His appearance in a “gravy robber” instructional video on The Tim & Eric Awesome Show is a great example of when he was nice & tightened up. Come on Zack! Drop & give me 20 [more often]!
